To all Jay’s brothers in arms overseas and stateside:
I appreciate you giving me an opportunity to speak about my son. I take comfort knowing that he touched many people. His greatest achievements in my mind included serving his country and raising his son, Devin, as a single parent. My heart is broken thinking my son will never see his child grow up, experience his first baseball game, dating, marriage. My grandson will grow up without a father that loved him dearly.
I know Jay loved the Army. He spoke to me about all his friends there. He was very optimistic that he would be returning home safely. I asked him if he planned on taking leave for Christmas. He said, “No Mom, it is too soon”. “I want my leave to the US to come after half my tour is complete.” I understood that. Not in my wildest imagination did I expect we would have to bury him just a few weeks before Christmas. I am told that God works in mysterious ways and there is a reason he calls home his children. I am trying really hard to accept this. Jay was my baby and my only son. I loved him with all my heart and would change places with him if I could. A mother should never have to bury her child. Our lives will never be the same without him. I really don’t know what to do. As I write this, my son is still not in the states. At the earliest he will arrive by the weekend. We have been getting many calls and frankly I don’t know what to say to anyone except he loved the army and died fighting for what he believed in. You see some people serve their country because they have to. My son, served his country because he wanted to.
My husband and I would welcome anyone contacting us on thoughts or experiences you had with Jay.
I believe that would bring us comfort. To James, you were the brother Jay never had and were truly a great friend to my son. Thank you for all you are doing for us during this difficult period.
Enclosed are a few pictures of Jay. I especially wanted to share photos of Jay with his son. He may be gone now but I am determined to keep his memory alive for my grandson.
Thank you all for being a part of my son’s life. Whenever he spoke about you guys, you could see, you could feel, the sense of pride he felt knowing that you would be at his side in Iraq.
God Bless You All and Stay Safe,
Faye Crawford (mother of Jay R. Gauthreaux)
